Case Studies

In this dynamic and increasingly complex healthcare environment, regulatory pressures, quality of care concerns, and market access are challenging, the business goals of the entire pharmaceutical industry.  Additionally, the highly competitive landscape makes it imperative that marketed products are supported by sound research to identify and communicate clinical and health economic benefits.

You need clear, useful scientific information that offers a practical, targeted solution to your problems. Our solutions provide specific action steps and support you in communicating to stakeholders. Here are some examples of how Health Analytics have helped other businesses like yours:

The Challenge

A mid-size specialty pharmaceutical company sought to build a strong case for a first-in-class pipeline product in early Phase III clinical trials.  Without an appropriate ICD-10 code or precedent for Medicare reimbursement , the product would face significant barriers to use at launch.

The Objectives

  • Describe the burden of illness represented by the most likely patients

  • Identify the high-risk patients most amenable to the new therapy

  • Produce a risk model among patients who receive standard of care

  • Demonstrate value through a reduction in 30-day readmission to the hospital, rate of relapse, and other complications seen within 90 days of discharge

The Health  Analytics Solutions

  • The Client contacted Health Analytics because of their reputation, in-house expertise, access to CMS data, and specific knowledge on both reimbursement strategy and outcomes research.

  • Health Analytics developed a multi-faceted approach tot he solution that included the following:

    • Consultative Assessment and Collaboration: Health analytics helped Identify knowledge gaps in the scientific literature, define the most appropriate patient population, conceptualize the optimal research approach to effectively tell the value story, and develop an internal communication plan for the client organization.

    • Burden of Illness Analysis: The analysis characterized the treatment paradigms, patient types, and subpopulations of patients that would be the most likely candidates for the product.

    • Hospital-Specific Financial Analysis: Health Analytics evaluated individual/aggregate hospital cost and payments associated with the disease (challenging due to the complex relationship between "costs" and payments in Medicare).  This information enabled more accurate reporting of hospital treatment costs-metrics that CMS uses to set payments.

    • Risk Modeling: The practitioner-focused analysis characterized the factors that impact post-acute care costs, influence of high-risk patients, Medicare and commercial populations of patients, gaps in best practices, health economics modeling, actionable/non-actionable risk factors, and risk of adverse events.

  • Additionally, Health Analytics provided consultative guidance and materials necessary to communicate and socialize the analyses internally within the client organization.

The Results

Health Analytics translated the results of a strategic research plan, consisting of numerous studies, manuscripts, and conference presentations, into actionable intelligence.  The client welcomed the strategic collaboration, consultative approach, ability to work with the most relevant data sets, and specific expertise in outcomes research.  The work with Health Analytics built a value story at the beginning of Phase III development and enabled a smoother launch and market penetration of the product.

TESTIMONIALS

We wanted to improve patient treatment outcomes by creating a patient support program to compliment our best-in-class pharmacotherapy. Health Analytics evaluated the outcomes-to-ROI link, and then helped us refine the concept and launch a national program that provided the best outcomes improvement for a reasonable investment. Throughout the process, HA provided the data and analysis we needed to make our case to internal and external decision makers, and ultimately they delivered results.

Despite record spending on employee health benefits, declining productivity was really cutting into our margin. Health Analytics worked with our HMO to help us recognize the impact of health conditions we'd overlooked.

Clinical research indicated that one treatment protocol was reducing care costs and improving outcomes, but providers seemed reluctant to adopt it. We needed unbiased insight. Health Analytics gave it to us.
